The Customer Isn’t Always Right… But She’s Always the Customer: A Custom Ring Story

A few weeks ago, Adi walked into my studio absolutely thrilled. She was holding a picture of a ring she had seen online and said with excitement: “This is the perfect ring. I want exactly this with a massive center stone and two small diamonds on the sides, but the entire band needs to be very delicate and thin.”

I smiled and listened carefully. I started sketching and we moved to the computer to visualize the design together. But something wasn’t right.

“Adi,” I told her gently, “I completely understand the delicate style you’re dreaming of. However, placing such a large stone on a very thin band creates a real risk the ring could easily bend or break over time.”

Adi looked disappointed.

“But that’s what makes it beautiful… that’s what makes it special,” she said. “The customer is always right, aren’t they?”

Instead of simply agreeing, I took the time to explain why I recommended a different approach. We sat together and I walked her through:

• The true nature of gold (beautiful but relatively soft)
• How the weight and height of a large center stone affects structural stability
• Different setting techniques that can create the illusion of delicacy while keeping the ring strong for a lifetime

I showed her real examples of similar designs and suggested a slightly thicker band combined with a smarter setting style. I assured her: “If you don’t love the final result, we’ll make it exactly as you originally wanted.”

Adi agreed to trust the process.

When she returned to pick up the finished ring, her eyes lit up. She whispered in amazement: “Wow… it’s even more beautiful than I imagined. Thank you so much.”
